Marion Makes...

Having a good, low-key day so far. Erica's in a good mood. I finished the line art for my next drawing of her. I mentioned last night that I'm super excited for this one... There's a lot of fun detail in the wrinkles and tulle of her shirt, and this is the first time I get to draw her little hands and feet. I also just really like the shading and tone of this pic overall. I have a very good feeling about this one. I think her eyes will come out great.

Shots of the outline work with and without the picture I'm working from:

I use the outlining step as a chance to denote highlights and shadows too, so the overall look ends up being pretty busy and weird - lots of random circles in the middle of everything. The outline doesn't stick around for the finished product, so it doesn't end up mattering much.

As a side note, it's wild how I often end up feeling like I'm cheating by tracing from a photo. Tracing has been a big part of art since at least the renaissance, with the use of the camera obscura as a drawing aid, but it's still really easy to invalidate the skill involved in a good outline trace. Particularly when that skill is your own, lol.
